Actually, it was just the flying simulation on frenz hubbyz comp. The yoke was replaced by the joystick but therez no feet control aka peddles for the rudder as in real aircrafts
Marpigz first destination or country for flying is of cos, Changi Airport on Sunny Island!! So, Marpig flew a beginner's aircraft aka Tigermoth (WW2 pilots also learnt flying with Tigermoth)
The thing bout basic flying is to understand and control the ailerons on the trailing edge of the planez wing, elevators on the trailing edge of the planez tail on the horizontal stabiliser as well as the rudder, also on the trailing edge of the planez tail on the vertical stabiliser and how all these affect the row, pitch and yaw of the plane respectively. Much like controlling a boat but much more than tt bcos 1 needs to understand fluids dynamic and how boundary layers, difference in air pressure etc affects flying. This xplains why pilots needs to take so many theory lessons and tests... & oh, lotsa CONSTANT practice *gulps*
Taking off is easy peasy much like mushy peas (very nice when eaten with fish & chips!!) Just need to do pre-flight checks, straightened the nose of the place and increase speed
Commercial jet planes have a time lag between blasting the jet and the speed as many of u would had noticed. Once the taking-off speed is reached, just need to lift the yoke (ailerons) and lift the plane off!! Of cos, bcareful not to overdo it!! Needs a certain angle of attack aka itz the angle made by the planez horizontal axis with the horizontal ground
After taking off, itz not yet auto pilot!! Need to reach the legal height of tt particular plane (different plane have different legal height of flying so tt planes dont crash) as well as control the plane into itz cruising position. This involves steady, accurate and wols manoeuvre while making turns. In fact, after a certain manoeuvre, it can be quite an art to return the plane to the "normal" position, combining the effects of ailerons, rudder, blah blah blah
By the way, the rudder can help the pilot to do a sharp turn, together with the help of the ailerons. The pilot also needs to recover from fall, etc!! Gosh!! Itz not like driving or boating!!
Landing is much more fun and xciting!! Since the pilot can even switched off all engines (or put it to idle revolution) and do a gliding landing which was wat Marpig did!!
The plane can approach sideways and into the long str runway but tt is dangerous and require precise manoeuvre. Marpig did try it once successfully but the plane doesnt land str and needs to be corrected. In real situations, most probably every1 on board will be screaming!! :P
The proper way is to approach str on facing the runway. When approaching, there will be a row of lights to indicate to the pilot if he/she is approaching too low or too high. But Marpig cant rem wat colour means wat now :P
2nd time Marpig lands, the plane bounces up again aka "bubbles" (?) Guess all beginners will definitely land like this at least once simply bcos beginners have the mentality of "crushing while landing"!! hahahahahaha but the 3rd time Marpig lands really gd!! Even frenz hubby said itz brilliant for a beginner!! :D Right!! Give Marpig a plane to fly!!
Yeah!! 1st step to "Pigs can fly too"!!
Gosh!! Marpig really need to save up for her real flying lessons!! tsk tsk tsk... actually, it is a gd time to go to the US to learn since the dolla is dropping... but then again, oil/barrel is record high which is mad. anyw!!
Next is really cool!! Marpig learnt how to play the saxophone!!
Yeah!! Have always wanted to pick up a musical instrument bcos Marpig doesnt seem to have any special skills :( Used to play the keyboard when she was really young cos Marpigz dad bought them a Yamaha keyboard. However, Marpig am not gd at reading notes since family couldnt afford to send Marpig nor Marpigz sis for lessons, hence, self-taught!!
Wat then Marpigz dad did was to write down on the keyboards, numbers representing the notes using marker pen!! Itz easy to play like tt since one just need to memorise a string of numbers but hey!! ttz wasnt the proper way and no1 plays keyboard like tt... anyh, every1 loses interest in keyboard since... :P
Then, in primary sch, all of us learn how to play the recorder... eeew!! Marpigz am average and actually, Marpig prefers to draw then
Time passes and bcos of social norms and competition, itz all bout study and study. Now tt Marpig had already used 1/4 of her life (if she manages to live till 100 which is impossible) for pursuing paper qualifications, she now has more time for "discovering" and realising sm of her long-4gotten interests!!
Just like the wonderful feeling of the 1st time Marpig am able to breathe underwater (SCUBA diving lah!!), the feeling tt Marpig felt when she 1st blow on a saxophone was... "WAT?!"
Why? Bcos therez NO SOUND AT ALL no matter how hard Marpig blows into the sax!! Itz like blowing into a dumb thingy!! Hence the "WAT?!"
As with all other ths, therez always a 窍 门. Marpig always believe tt in learning any th, one needs to 1st understand how tt th works. In this case, noeing how notes are being created by a sax is the zeroth th to noe!!
Yes, a sax is a wind instrument (not tt it farts; gosh, Marpig just cant resist making a duh joke!! :P) but it is not blowing into it tt creates the notes like the flute or trumpet or trombone etc. In fact, wat one needs to do is to vibrate the wooden ridge on the mouth pcs much like vibrating a paper or leaf to make the sounds!!
Oh, it is also impt to moist this wooden ridge (& professionals do tt by licking it) so tt it is easier to vibrate. Now, follow wat Marpig does:
Rest the mouth pcs/wooden ridge on yr lower lip, then use the upper teeth to bite the upper part of the mouth pcs and close the mouth with the upper lip (curl the upper lip in when doing this) and one should end up like the way the pros do it.
The next trick is then to blow gently (like u would to the edge of a paper or leaf) to vibrate the ridge and wala!! The 1st note u get on the sax!!
Next is to understand tt with different shape of the mouth (specially with the lower lip & how the ridge rest on it), the notes from the sax will sound diff & ttz when notes "bend" which is why pple say sax is sexy!!
The shape of the lips is also known in French as the "embouchure" :D So, for 3 nights, Marpig quickly picked up the basics of playing the sax and enough to make her determined to buy and pick up playing a sax!! Too bad the instrument is not cheap and will costs ard 300+ quid!!
Marpig also couldnt play in her flat cos the acoustic of the walls are crap!! (Imagine, Marpig could hear watz going on the doorz neighbourz bedroom... OMG!!)
Anyw, it has always been rumoured tt how thick a personz lips are, determine wat wind instrument he/she will play in a sch band. Itz not really applicable for the sax Marpig was told since the more impt th is to grasp the qiao men of getting THE individualz preferred embouchure
Ah~~~ it had been a long & wordy bloggie entry bout 2 very interesting (well, to Marpig!!) hobbies!! Actually, there other hobbies Marpig likes too!! Eg,
B4 Marpig end orf with a series of photos of very old game machines which Marpig took while in Wookey Hole, she shall share 2 Irish jokes (therez this th bout the Irish being illogical pple as the English say :P) which her frenz hubby shared:
1) 1 dae, a pig who ate too much, fell onto the grd and rested. On comes a drunken man and fell onto the grd and lay beside the pig. (Here comes the best part) Sm1 came along and saw the drunken man and said, "You can tel a man who boozes by the company he chooses" Hearing tt, the pig got up and ylwols walked away
2) An Irish man said to his fren, "I wil meet u by the gate @ 4pm. If I'm there 1st, I will draw a x on the wal. If u r there 1st, u will rub it away"
